Carl Dahlquist, 1968
|
Carl A. Dahlquist is credited with elevating the art and craft of pressure sensitive tapes to a science. Dahlquist is best known for his work at 3M to determine the modulus value of a material necessary for it to be deformable enough and tacky enough to be considered as a pressure sensitive adhesive, known as the Dahlquist criteria.
Dahlquist graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in chemical engineering and joined the Central Research Department of 3M in 1943. His principal fields of interest during his 36-year career at 3M were adhesion, the rheology of adhesive materials and the investigation of the role of mechanical properties of polymers in tack, peel adhesion and vibration damping. He officially retired from 3M in 1979 as a corporate scientist, 3M's highest technical position, although he continued on a part-time consulting basis for an additional 20 years, expanding his interests into biomaterials and biological adhesion during that time. He published over 20 technical papers and was named as an author on at least 9 U.S. patents issued to 3M.
PSTC's Carl Dahlquist Award
In his honor, the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council presents the Carl Dahlquist Award to one speaker at each annual technical seminar who, following the evaluation of a panel of judges, demonstrates the very best in research relating to adhesive tape technology. The selection covers a range of criteria, concentrating on originality and scientific contribution, but also including presentation and quality of visuals. The highly regarded award is a tribute to both Dahlquist and to the many others like him who have brought us to today's level of technology and understanding.
