In 1973, John Johnston presented a technical paper to a round table consisting of the PSTC technical committee of the time and other PSTC members, heralding the beginning of what became PSTC's annual technical seminar. Johnston has been active every step of the way, sharing his technical knowledge through teaching, presenting papers, mentoring and leading committee work -- always striving for technical advancement. Today, due in large part to his leadership, the technical seminar has grown to a global event annually attracting more than 500 pressure sensitive adhesive tape enthusiasts striving to learn from the industry's best.

Johnston holds a degree in science from London University and has carried out and published fundamental research into pressure sensitive adhesive and tape behavior. For more than 25 years he was head of research and development for major adhesive tape manufacturers. He holds several patents on PSA technology and is in the PSTC Hall of Fame. Today in his "retirement," Johnston is a volunteer teacher on the analysis of tapes at FBI forensic science training schools.
Perhaps Johnston is best known for his accomplishments in promoting tape testing to ensure quality product performance and his innovative tape applications research and development efforts to elevate PSA tape to the treasured role it holds today as a preferred fastening and bonding system.
In 2006, PSTC established The John Johnston Adhesive Technology Session to honor Johnston's personal commitment to excellence throughout his 50-plus year career. PSTC and the industry have benefited greatly from his leadership.
