THE HUNT FOR THE ELUSIVE SILICONE/ADHESIVE LOCK-UP

Challenge: To get adhesive and release suppliers to work together on issues which have affected tape manufacturers at one time or another.

Objective: To determine the cause of release lock-up via planned experimentation with solution acrylic adhesives and silicone release liners. And secondly, to be able to help tape manufacturers to avoid the pitfall of release build/lock-up. This was to be done in a collaborative manner between the release and adhesive manufactures.

Study: The initial plan was to investigate "known" culprits, in theory, such as acid content in the acrylic polymer backbone interacting with high crosslinker containing silicone coatings. Secondary studies regarding polymer additives such as tackifiers, plasticizers and high residual monomer in the adhesive were also investigated.
