An Investigation of Acrylic Polymer and Silicone Interactions
Elizabeth Febbo and Peter Walter, National Adhesives
Kevin Cunningham, Loparex
The release force generated between a pressure sensitive adhesive and silicone coated release liner is subject to many factors which can affect this performance based on peel speed, length and specific conditions of aging and many other factors1. This study seeks to isolate and examine the roll of chemical interaction between the cross linking component of addition cured silicone, silicone hydride, and acrylic acid functionalities of a solvent applied acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive. Such an interaction is a leading suspect in "acrylic lockup" phenomenon.
