RSS, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dupps Company, is pleased to announce that its Harmonite® products have met all the requirements of the European Union’s REACH Article 33 “Substances of Very High Concern” communications protocols. The independent environmental compliance consultancy that performed the regulatory review concluded that none of the key constituents present in Harmonite are currently listed on the EU REACH Candidate List, Annex XIV or Annex XVII. The firm went on to state, “at this time, there are no EU REACH Article 33 or other downstream user communication obligations or restrictions associated with importation of Harmonite-containing products into the EU.” This means that customers shipping end product articles to the EU can freely incorporate Harmonite into their formulations with no further supply chain reporting obligations as it pertains to Harmonite. Insulating buildings with pressure-sensitive tape

PSTC President Michel Merkx
The Construction Specifier, January 2018

Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape technologies have properties that can insulate a building from environmental events such as precipitation, vapor ingress, extreme cold and heat, and external noise. While there may be a temptation to use putties and caulks instead of PSA tapes for insulation purposes, those materials are typically employed as fillers meant to span gaps—they do not provide an air or water barrier. Liquid sealants and mechanical fasteners are often utilized on exposed building surfaces, but PSA tapes can be used as an effective alternative or complementary barrier throughout a building by sealing areas like windows and doors that may be vulnerable to outside environmental fluctuations.

Tape, which is generally thought of as a product binding things together, is actually multifaceted and versatile with usage going beyond its more understood ‘stickiness.’ In other words, tapes are sticky, but are also developed to comprise properties made for specific applications, including barrier and insulation. Various PSA tape backings (e.g. aluminum and multilayer films) can create a vapor barrier to protect the insulation. By using a Class-1 vapor barrier with very low permeability as a backing material, one can extend the life of the insulation system. Read more.

New blog post from PSTC President Michel Merkx

Building Enclosure Online, Nov. 2017: PSA Tape – Beyond the “Sticky
Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape, which is generally thought of as a product that bonds things together, is actually a multifaceted and versatile product with usage that goes beyond its more understood ‘stickiness.’ In other words, tapes - while sticky - are also developed so they are comprised of properties tailored to specific applications, including barrier and insulation applications. PSA tape technologies can insulate a building from environmental events such as precipitation, vapor ingress, extreme cold and heat, as well as external noise. Various PSA tape backings, such as aluminum or multi-layer films, can create a vapor barrier protecting the insulation. Not only does tape have to provide a barrier against water, it also has to stick under wet - and often humid - conditions. Moisture coming onto the floor from above may be easier to detect, but moisture emanating from below a flooring structure may require delving below the floor framing and into a sub-area to find its origin. Read more

Loparex Americas Announces Raw Material-Driven Price Increase: Due to increases in raw materials, effective with products shipping on or after January 15, 2018, or as contracts allow, Loparex will be increasing pricing for release liners and films 2.4% - 6.1% depending on product construction. The increase follows several years where the US release liner industry has experienced relative stability of raw material availability and costs. However, in recent months, volatility in the paper, silicones and polymer resin industries has led to market-based pricing actions driven by tightness of supply, facility closures, supplier consolidations, and indexed adjustments. PSTC to Exhibit at 2018 International Builder's Show

Booth to Demonstrate “The House that Tape Built”

PSTC recently announced its participation as an exhibitor at the 2018 NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS), taking place January 9-11, in Orlando, Florida.  IBS attendees visiting PSTC’s booth (#S1626) will see first-hand how integral pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape is to the construction of a well-built house. “From the crawl space to the roof and all places in between, we’re going to show PSTC booth visitors just how a house is built using tape,” said Michel Merkx, president of PSTC.

According to Merkx, while PSA tape used in construction projects is not unusual, there are applications that may not be immediately thought of when considering tape for building. “Sticking things together is typically the first thing people think about when they think about tape,” explained Merkx. “And while it helps to understand tape’s  innate ‘stickiness’ that plays a key role in its functionality, PSA tapes also provide barrier against water and help to increase a home’s efficiencies, providing barriers between the home’s structure and the outside elements.” Read more

Former PSTC Executive Director Glen Anderson Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we share with you news of the loss of our dear friend, former PSTC Executive Director and Hall of Fame member Glen Anderson. After a long battle with cancer, Glen passed away peacefully on March 10, 2017, with his loving family by his side.

Glen was PSTC’s Executive President from 1982 - 2012. After his retirement in 2012, the Technical Seminar’s Opening Session was appropriately named the “Glen Anderson Opening Session” to honor his commitment and dedication to PSTC. Glen’s passion, vision and enthusiasm were instrumental to PSTC’s success today. His ability to create task forces and committees were vital to establishing some key initiatives for the organization.

Glen was a great leader and cherished friend to all who knew him. He recently reached out to PSTC staff and expressed the following: "We all have gifts to share with others, so do not hold back, but reach out and give generously to all who you touch."

Anyone who met Glen - both inside and outside PSTC - can surely attest that he embodied that mindset. We ask you to join us in keeping Glen's family and friends in your thoughts at this sad time. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Northfield, Illinois.
